Man Up

Have you ever heard the term ‘Man Up’?  Often it is used to encourage a guy to be bold and stand for what is right.  Recently I thought of this and realized how many young men do not know how to be a man; who has taught them?  How can they ‘Man Up’ based on what our society and the media teach that a man should be?

At Straight Street, we are trying harder to invest in the lives of young men and young fathers, too.  This year we have started a teen father’s group that meets at the same time as the teen mother’s group.  We were challenged as more teen fathers saw the impact the ministry is having on the young mothers and they started asking for help.

Teen Father Facts:

  • 8 out of 10 teen dads don’t marry the mother of their child.
  • Teen dads are less likely to finish high school than their peers. You can provide free babysitting for parents taking GED classes.
  • Children who don’t live with their fathers are 5 times more likely to be poverty-stricken than children with both parents at home.
  • Teen fathers face a lack of teen parent programs to help them.

Teens without a father at home:

  • Fatherless children are at a dramatically greater risk of drug and alcohol abuse, mental illness, suicide, poor educational performance, teen pregnancy, and criminality, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, National Center for Health Statistics.
  • 63% of youth suicides are from fatherless homes according to the U.S. Bureau of the Census.
  • 71% of all high school dropouts come from fatherless homes according to the National Principals Association Report on the State of High Schools.

Please pray as we strive to instill in teens that God loves them. He is a Father that will not leave them and that He created them with a purpose and plan.  Often we see generational trends of fatherless homes. It is so common that it is considered to be normal- and this shouldn’t be normal!

Would you pray that more Christian men would volunteer at Straight Street on Saturday nights? Pray that more men would want to mentor children who have one or both parents in prison? Pray that the boys we see would desire to break generations of fatherless homes. Pray that our community would see a revival because Christian men are being bold fathers & leaders in their homes and making an impact in the lives of others that do not have an earthly father at home.

Street Ransom Update

On Saturday, January 31st  , Straight Street held a “Justice Experience” to share about human trafficking on a local and global level. Over 125 people participated! Congressman Bob Goodlatte discussed the newest laws that are aimed at helping the victims and persecuting the perpetrators. The Experience also included a powerful documentary. Several ministries shared information about public education and services that are available for victims.goodlate&kathleen

Kathleen Chester is our newest addition to the Street Ransom team. Kathleen helped with a shelter in Maryland that served adult victims of human trafficking.  She has a passion and unique abilities to help develop the Street Ransom ministry. (We will continue the mentorship with Wellspring Living.)

Often people think, “Get a building.  Open a shelter and the girls will come.”  It is much more complex than that! We are working diligently to address the legal issues that involved with helping a child that has been rescued. We are working with judges, court service directors, and social service providers to make sure that we will be ready to care for the young victims.

Since May 2014, we have been negotiating on the property of a previous facility. The owners are waiting for us to provide a confirmation of funding to both purchase the building and to

sustain the ministry. We are raising the funds needed for the purchase, remodeling, and ongoing operational costs. Please contact Keith@straightstreet.org or 540.342.4971 for more information on specific needs and costs.

Community Prayer

Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day.” Hebrews 10:25

Straight Street is working with area churches and The Roanoke Police Department to cover one of the most drug infested areas of Roanoke with prayer.  We started last year and are working on plans for 2015.  Our verse is Hebrews 10:25 – our first list of streets to pray for, 10th through 25th – that’s how we determined this as our verse.  We believe God can restore the broken and ask that you pray us.  More information will be available soon for Prayer Walks and I hope you can join us.

Then your light will break forth like the dawn,   and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness[a] will go before you, and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard.  Then you will call, and the Lord will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I. “If you do away with the yoke of oppression, with the pointing finger and malicious talk, and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday.  The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame.  You will be like a well-watered garden,    like a spring whose waters never fail.  Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins and will raise up the age-old foundations; you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls, Restorer of Streets with Dwellings.

Good health is a result of regular exercise and lifestyle. How can medicaments hels up? However, there are web-sites where you can buy medicaments smoothly. A prevalent sexual appeal among men is the erectile malfunction. Viagra is a medicine set to treat a lot of complaints. What do you know about “cheap cialis“? Did somebody tell you about “cialis pills“? A lot of websites describe it as “http://nvisionfor.com/cialis-com-review.html“. Several of the medications used to treat depression can also suppress your sex drive and make it harder to get an erection. There are more than 200 common drugs can cause this problem. Along with their useful effects, most medicaments, notwithstanding, have unwanted side effects although generally not everyone experiences them. Do not use such treatment without telling your physician if you are pregnant.
